A Surprising Secret to Making a Superior Margarita From Scratch

Nothing makes a tequila connoisseur happier on a hot day (or night) than a refreshingly tart and salty classic margarita. The shelves of supermarkets and liquor stores are stocked with margarita mixtures marketed with catchphrases like “Just add tequila!” While tequila and citrus juice are essential components, there is more to a margarita than that.

The juice is the key to a superb margarita recipe. The real trick is using freshly squeezed lime juice and a freshly squeezed orange juice splash. You’re right. If you want a margarita that tastes better and is more refreshing, use fresh orange juice instead of orange-flavoured liquor.

This is why:

Triple Sec is an orange-flavoured liqueur made by macerating orange peels with sugar and alcohol. It’s a standard addition to many margarita recipes. If you choose a sweetened liqueur like this one, you’ll have to add more orange flavour or alcohol to your cocktail if you want to modify the sweetness or booziness.

Start with equal tequila and freshly squeezed lime juice, around 2 ounces each for a single dosage, rather than Tequila Triple Sec.
Then, add some sugar to taste using simple syrup. Agave is a beautiful alternative to simple syrup in most cuisines, not just drinks, due to its well-balanced sweetness that complements the citrus and tequila aromas.
In each glass, place one tablespoon of sugar (you can always add more, but you can’t take it away), one or two drops of pure extract of orange or lemon, and many ice cubes.
I would like you to give it a good shake after that. Is this a cocktail? If so, did you shake it? If you didn’t, it’s okay; stir it up with assurance. A mason jar can be used as an alternative.
A lime slice can be used to season the salty rim of a rock glass if desired. You can now pour your ideal margarita over ice and a salted rim in a margarita glass.
A slice of lime should be included for squeezing.
You’re good to go with only a sack of limes, some oranges, and a sunny area to enjoy your cocktail.
